A couple and their daughter, a university student, were stabbed early Saturday at Kalabagan in the capital by a boy, reportedly having an affair of love with the girl, after they had refused to give him money to go abroad.
The victims are businessman Aminur Rahman, 55, his wife Rokhsana Momtaz, 48 and their daughter Fouzia Fariha Barsha, 22, a third-year student of computer science in Daffodil International University.
The incident took place in the city just two days after businessman Sadikur Rahman and his wife Romana Nargis were shot dead in their house at Gulshan on Wednesday allegedly by a man who wanted to marry her daughter.
The family said Mohammed Ashraf, 22, a classmate of Barsha, fell in love with the girlafter they had got admitted to the university and the man had visited the family for three years.
Ashraf suddenly stopped visiting Barsha’s family five months ago saying he was trying to go to London for studies.
Ashraf went to Barsha’s house at Kalabagan about 9:00pm on Friday saying that he wanted to meet Barsha for his studies.
At one point, he held the family hostage in the guestroom and snatched all the mobiles from them, severed the landline and demanded Tk. 20 lakh from Barsha’s father. Sensing trouble, Barsha’s elder sister Susan slipped into a bathroom.
Pulling out a sharp weapon and holding Barsha hostage, Ashraf repeatedly demanded Tk. 20 lakh from Aminur.
Aminur at one point gave him a cheque for Tk 50,000 of the Elephant Bank branch of the Prime Bank but he refused to agree to the amount and confined them to the room.
Soon after a heated argument with Aminur, Ashraf tried to hack Barsha and stabbed her in the throat and as her parents tried to save her, he also stabbed them indiscriminately and got away by jumping over the boundary wall about 4:00am.
The injured were taken to LabAid Hospital where they were given first-aid treatment before being shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where they were being treated till Saturday night.
Aminur, who was lying in a hospital, said, ‘Ashraf threatened to kill Barsha and stabbed her in the throat. As we advanced to save her, he also stabbed us indiscriminately.’
Ramna zone police deputy commissioner Krishnapada Roy said, ‘We have established that the boy had an affair of love with the girl and he used to visit the family.’
‘We will establish whether the incident took place only for Tk 20 lakh or something else after arresting Ashraf,’ Krishnapada said.
