The Department Of Environment fined Bangladesh Steel Re-rolling Mills Tk 40.5 lakh on charge of cutting hills at Jorarganj in Mirsharai upazila of the Chittagong district on Wednesday.
DoE divisional director Jafar Alam said six acres of hilly area hade been turned into plain land at Mastannagar of Durgapur and they found BSRM responsible for cutting a portion of hills.
‘We fined BSRM Tk 40 lakh and 50 thousand after a hearing,’ he said adding that the company had also been directed to reshape the area into previous state, pilling up earth.
According to DoE sources, they issued clearance certificate to BSRM for setting up industry on 50 acres of hilly and plain lands at Durgapur without cutting the hills.
