The Bangladesh Tobacco Control Research Network, a platform of professionals, was formally launched in Dhaka Thursday night aiming to provide support and guidance to the potential tobacco control researchers in Bangladesh. The other objectives of the BTCRN are to review Bangladesh-specific tobacco control-related research activities, identify gaps and disseminate tobacco control research findings to enhance support for tobacco control policy development and help implementation of the rules.
The BTCRN is comprised of professionals from different relevant ministries and departments, public and private universities, research institutions, development organisations and individuals interested to tobacco control research.
Professor Sohel Reza Chowdhury of National Heart Foundation was made president of the founding executive committee of the BTCRN.
North South University vice-chancellor Professor Amin U Sarkar, Independent University vice-chancellor Professor M Omar Rahman, additional secretary to health and family welfare ministry Shafiqul Islam Laskar, director of the Institute of Global Tobacco Control of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of USA Joana Cohen and director of the Bangladesh Centre for Communications Programme Mohammad Shahjahan, among others, spoke at the launching programme.
