INTERNET SERVICE VIOLATION
BTRC serves show-cause notices on 3 telcos
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission recently issued show-cause notices to three mobile phone operators as they failed to inform
the internet users about the usage of their packages.
Last week the BTRC issued the show-cause notices to Banglalink, Robi and Teletalk asking them to explain why the companies failed to implement the commission’s directive for volume-based internet users in two years.
It also asked the three operators to submit their replies within 30 days from the issuance of the notice issued on July 3.
The mobile phone companies offer many volume-based internet packages where a subscriber
can buy a specific amount of bandwidth against a fixed price.
The BTRC in April 2011 asked the mobile phone companies to notify the subscribers of the volume-based internet package about the usage of the package either through SMS or email.
As per the BTRC directive, the mobile phone companies have to notify the volume-based internet users twice — first, when 50 per cent of the total volume of a package is used and second, when 80 per cent of the package is used.
BTRC officials said the commission sent several reminders in the last two years but the three companies were delaying to implement the order.
‘We asked them to explain their ground for not implementing the directive and will take action if their replies are not satisfactory,’ a senior BTRC official told New Age.
He said two other mobile phone companies already implemented the directive issued by the commission in this regard.
‘Sometimes users face bill shocks as the mobile companies renew the package without informing the clients,’ he said.
Asked about the issue Robi in a statement said that the company received the BTRC notice.
‘We have received the show-cause notice from the BTRC. We are studying the document and will reply accordingly,’ Robi said in an email reply to New Age on Monday.
Banglalink said it was yet to comply with the directive due to technical problem.
‘Banglalink has been going through a major technology upgradation since the beginning of this year, which is now nearing completion. We have been working on this particular service feature and will be launched as soon as it is technically ready,’ the company said in an email reply to New Age on Monday.
