Brothers Union completed the semi-final line up of Grameenphone Super Cup when they held Mohammedan Sporting Club to a goalless draw in their final Group match
at the rain-soaked Bangabandhu National Stadium on Wednesday.
Mohammedan, already qualified for the final four from this group, emerged as Group B champions and they will now take on Muktijoddha Sangsad KC in the second semi-final on June 22.
Brothers will face Sheikh Russell KC in the other semi-final on June 21.
The outcome of Mohammedan-Brothers match, made the second match between Sheikh Jamal DC and Team BJMC, ended as late as 11;00pm, a mere academic affair.
Jamal had a chance if Mohammedan could beat Brothers, but the black-and-white outfit showed little interest in favouring the Dhanmondi-based club.
Having confirmed the semi-final berth already, Mohammedan made as many as seven changes to their starting line-up from the previous match though they risked facing treble-winners Russell in the semis.
The absence of regular players rightly exposed Mohammedan’s backline several times though Brothers, who came to the field knowing that a draw would be enough, could not take the chances.
Jewel Rana, Brothers’ 19-year-old new revelation in the tournament who had scored three goals in two matches, penetrated the Mohammedan backline and went close to scoring twice before missing both the chances.
With the players from both the sides struggling to keep their balance on the slippery pitch, Mohammedan forward Mohammad Robin forced Brothers goalkeeper Sujan Chowdhury to
make a brilliant save on the half-hour mark.
The game, already delayed by 45 minutes due to heavy shower, was suspended for five minutes due to blackout and when the game resumed Mohammedan substitute winger Shariful Islam rattled the crosspiece.
