Students of Barisal University formed a human chain and held a rally Tuesday afternoon, demanding reforms in the quota system in all public service examinations, including Bangladesh Civil Service.
They held the human chain rally at Bibir Pukur Paar of the city centre, where leaders of the students demanded recruitment in government job on the basis of merit. The quota system in BCS exam was introduced under a 1972 constitutional provision to make room for people from relatively backward regions.
Currently, 56 per cent of the posts in the BCS are reserved under quota of which, 30 per cent go to freedom fighters’ children and grandchildren, 10 per cent to women, and five per cent to indigenous people, 10 per cent to people of some districts, and one per cent to the physically challenged people, they said.
Though the quota system is relevant for some sectors, the percentage should be lesser. There should be quota for disadvantaged groups, but it should not be a permanent arrangement as it prevents the real talents, they observed.
