The teachers of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology said that they were consulting lawyers to appeal against High Court’s injunction on their movement for the removal of the vice chancellor and the pro-vice chancellor. They postponed their rally on Wednesday night following the injunction.
BUET Teachers Association said it would take a decision on the next course of action at its meeting scheduled for Saturday.
The teachers have been demanding removal of the VC and the Pro-VC for various irregularities they committed in running the university.
The teachers said that they were awaiting the certified copy of the injunction imposed by a High Court bench on July 31.
‘We do not want the court to bring contempt of court charges by continuing the movement violating the injunction, but we are yet to get the certified copy of the order,’ BUET Students’ Welfare director Aminul Islam said.
He said ‘The VC and the Pro-VC caused the unprecedented great loss for the reputed university and it will be tough for a new vice-chancellor to make up the loss.’
BUET Teachers Association general secretary Ashraful Islam told New Age that the teachers await the copy of the court order.
‘After receiving the copy of the court order, we would consult a lawyer and decide our next course of action’ he said.
Meanwhile, the vice-chancellor said that the crisis would be resolved through discussions with the teachers and the classes would resume after the Ramadan and Eid vacation.
He said that the classes would not resume before August 24, when the Eid vacation would end.
On July 11, the VC closed BUET for 44 days as he was unable to bring the teachers’ agitations to and end.
On July 11, all the five deans and the 17 department heads and directors of three institutes under the university resigned as the vice-chancellor and the pro-vice-chancellor refused to quit.
The teachers had been rallying against the BUET administration since April 8, with breaks.
The teachers also submitted a memorandum to the president, which was under consideration according to the government’s reply sent to the teachers.
