Agitated businessmen at Battala Bazaar in the Barisal city Monday noon cordoned a team of mobile court conducting drive against illegal polythene products.
Businessmen and environment department sources said a DoE mobile, led by Muktadir Hussain and accompanied by Papiya Sultana, administrative magistrates,DoE officials and staff, launched a drive at Battata Bazaar, one of the large kitchen market in the city, Monday noon.
Coming to know about the drive, the businessmen started to shut their shops and in the mean time the court seized about 5kg polythene goods and fined five shops.
Haoladar Stores and Latif Grocer were fined Tk 500 each, Zaman Stores, Saad Bakery and New Alam Stores were fined Tk 1,000 each.
When the court fined a grocery shop, Zaman Stores, Tk 30,000, the businessman cordoned the magistrates and staff of the court, protesting at the high amount of fine money.
The cordon was lifted after about one hour as the fine issued against Zaman Stores was reduced to Tk 1,000 from Tk 30,000.
Sukumar Biswas, divisional director of DoE office, said the mobile court members were not cordoned, but agitated businessmen protested at the drive closing there shops.
