The acting secretary general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, on Thursday said the cabinet had been expanded in a bid
to ‘contain rebellion’ in the Awami League-led alliance government.
Talking with reporters at the graveside of Ziaur Rahman, he said the government’s days were numbered.
Fakhrul said the government had lost popularity and was trying to survive on antibiotic but that would not work. ‘Fall of the government is now a matter of time.’
Fakhrul said cabinet had been expanded to console or please some of its allies.
Every government does it for survival when it finds itself on the brink.’
Earlier, Fakhrul along with leaders of the new central committee of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal placed wreaths at the grave of Zia and offered prayers.
Leaders and activists of JCD were present on the occasion.
On September 3, the five names of JCD’s new central committee, approved by BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, was announced. They are: president – Abdul Kader Bhuiyan Zewel, senior vice-chairman – Bazlul Karim Chowdhury Abed, general secretary – Habibur Rashid Habib, joint secretary – Obadiul Quader Nasir and organising secretary – Rajib Hasan.
