Mohammedan Sporting Club secured the services of Portuguese tactician Rui Jose Capela Batista as head coach of the ongoing season after a six-month contract was agreed on Tuesday.
After a two-day long journey, Rui Capela arrived in Dhaka on Tuesday and immediately signed with the Motijheel-based football giant. Mohammedan were in search of a coach after their previous trainer Saiful Bari Titu decided to join the Bangladesh Football Federation in the capacity of an adviser.
Rui Capela became the eighth foreign coach of Mohammedan and the Portuguese has targeted the Bangladesh Premier Football League title that has eluded the Black and White outfit in each of the previous six editions.
Rui Capela has a long coaching experience and boasts a level-two UEFA licence. Prior to arriving in Bangladesh, he was the sporting director of the Under-18 side of Paraguayan second division club, 3 de Febrero.
The Portuguese trainer also worked with several clubs in his country like Esperanca de Lagos, Portimonense, Grupo Desportivode Lagoas and Quarteirnese.
Rui Capela, who played for the Portugal Under-16 and U-18 national sides, enhanced his coaching reputation by working as a scout for Portuguese top flight clubs SL Benfica (2004-2006) and FC Porto (2007-2010).
‘I want to utilise my previous coaching experiences here in order to bring success for Mohammedan,’ said Rui Capela on Tuesday.
‘I like good football and it is very important for me to coach Mohammedan, which is a major club in Bangladesh,’ added the 44-year old Portuguese coach.
‘I have coaching experience in Europe and South America and this time I have chosen to gather some experience in Asia and I am taking the challenge.’
Rui Capela claimed that he has a good relationship with Portuguese football superstar Luis Figo as both of them played together for the national side in different age levels.
