The Bangladesh Cricket Board should consider appointing a captain for a long period of time to give him the opportunity to implement his plans, Tigers’ skipper Mushfiqur Rahim said on Tuesday.
The captaincy issue was raised on Tuesday during the pre-match press conference as Mushfiq is set to end his term today with the Bangladesh-New Zealand one-off Twenty20 International at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
Mushfiq, first made captain in 2011 after a disastrous Zimbabwe tour, was being appointed on a series-by-series basis despite his remarkable success in Test and ODIs.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board refrained from appointing him permanently, as the wicketkeeper-batsman is apparently prone to emotional breakdowns.
This is one of the reasons, according to officials, that they appointed Shane Jurgensen coach up to the 2015 World Cup but refused to give Mushfiq an extension beyond December 2013.
However, Mushfiq insisted that it will bring no good for the team.
‘Whoever becomes the captain should be given enough time,’ Mushfiq told reporters at Mirpur. ‘It is needed so that he can have time to plan and execute, like the way the coach was given.’
‘The coach has some plans, similarly the captain and the selectors also have to plan so that they can work accordingly,’ he said.
‘It will be better for the team and in future that will happen,’ he added.
Mushfiq has captained the Tigers in 12 Test matches, with one win and seven losses and four draws, while in 24 ODI’s he has skippered Bangladesh to 11 wins and 12 losses, with one match abandoned.
In the 14 Twenty20 games under his leadership, the Tigers have registered six wins and eight losses.
