Brothers fined Tk one lakh, ban on Sohrawardi upheld, match-referee Obaidul faces two-year suspension, deputy umpires’ manager cautioned
The Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis on Sunday ordered a re-match between Brothers Union and Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club after the former fielded a suspended player in their corresponding fixture in the Dhaka Premier League.
Brothers beat Jamal by six wickets to qualify for the Super League, but Jamal protested and demanded that the points should be awarded to them as their opponents had fielded Sohrawardi Shuvo.
Sohrawardi was suspended for a match and fined Tk 20,000 by match referee for misconduct in Brothers’ previous match against Abahani. However, Brothers claimed that they were not officially informed of the decision and thus they had no knowledge about the suspension.
The match referee of the Brothers-Jamal match also claimed to have no information about the suspension.
CCDM called a hearing as Jamal lodged an official complaint, but it could not give any decision immediately.
After a directive from the Bangladesh Cricket Board, the CCDM ordered the re-match on November 16 and fined Brothers Tk one lakh for fielding the suspended Sohrawardi. It also banned Sorhrawardi for the match.
The CCDM also recommended the BCB umpires committee to suspend Obaidul Haque, the match referee of the Brothers-Abahani match, for two years for failing to communicate his decision of suspension properly to the involved team and player.
It also recommended for deputy umpires manager Sharif Mahmud Palash to be cautioned for his part in the scandal. It was found that match referee Obaidul had informed the matter to Palash but he did not pass the message to the match officials of Brothers-Jamal match.
In a statement on Thursday, the CCDM said since there is no clear provision of punishment in the bylaws for fielding a suspended player it has ordered the re-match under the clause-10, 10 (11), 11(a) and 16( C).
The re-match will be held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium and the winners will qualify for the Super League to join Gazi Tank Cricketers, Prime Doleshwar, Mohammedan Sporting Club, Prime Bank and Kalabagan Cricket Academy.
In case of tie or no-result, Sheikh Jamal will qualify as they currently lead Brothers by one point in the table with the latters’ two points from the previous match docked.
No immediate reaction of Brothers or Jamal could be obtained.
