An evening of classical music and dance at a programme at the Music and Dance Centre of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy entertained classical music aficionados on Thursday. The academy organised the programme featuring classical recitals presented by noted classical dancers, vocalists and instrumentalists. Noted dancers Shamim Ara Nipa and Shibly Mohammad, along with the dancers of their dance organisation Nrityanchal, set the auditorium abuzz with a group Kathak presentation which was the first performance of that programme.
Shibley and Nipa used the space on the stage effectively in a number that they led from the
front, where other dancers performed behind them.
An orchestral presentation of classical music instruments—tabla, pakhowaj, harmonium and mridungo poured melodious compositions into the ears of the listeners.
Noted Indian classical instrumentalist Rajrupa Chowdhury commenced her rendition on pakhowaj rather tardily, and gradually upped the tempo as she got in the groove. Audiences were charmed by the magic of her whimsical fingers on the strings of pakhowaj.

Vocalist Priyanka Gope added another dimension of vocal presentation to the programme which was being dominated by dance and instrumental pieces thus far. The noted artiste presented raga rageshree in her delighting voice.
The programme also featured vocal performance of raga suddho kalyan and raga bageshree respectively by Ashit Dey and Maniruzzaman. The last presentation on the show was a solo Bharat Natyam piece, which is one of the major classical dance genres, by Arpita Shome.
Earlier in the programme, Liaquat Ali Lucky, director general of the academy, delivered a speech where he talked about the importance of practicing classical music and dance to uphold the cultural tradition of the country.
