Satellite television Channel-9 has secured the sponsorship rights of the Bangabandhu Gold Cup football tournament for the next five years when they signed a deal with the Bangladesh Football Federation on Thursday. They agreed to provide Tk six crore for each edition of the tournament and handed over a cheque of Tk one crore for the upcoming third edition, which will begin sometime in January.
BFF president Kazi Salahuddin and managing director of the Channel-9 Enayetur Rahman Bappi signed the deal on behalf of their respective organisations.
‘We have decided to host the Bangabandhu Gold Cup in a regular basis and we are thankful to Channel-9 for extending their support,’ Salahuddin said at a press conference on Thursday.
Five countries – Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Bahrain and Laos – gave their consent about participating in the tournament.
But the BFF said it is yet to confirm the participating countries as Qatar and Pakistan also showed a late interest.
‘Seven countries gave their consent but we can take only five alongside Bangladesh,’ said Salahuddin. ‘So we will confirm the participating team later.’
