National hockey team coach Mahbub Harun selected his 18-man final squad for the forthcoming South Asian Games on Saturday without experienced penalty-corner specialist Mamunur Rahman Chayan and midfielder Kamruzzaman Rana. Chayan was dropped from the side for his lack of fitness and poor performance in the practice sessions while Rana was excluded due to his knee injury.
‘The fitness of both the players are not up to the mark while Rana has also been suffering from knee injury,’ said Harun.
‘Ashraful Islam is doing better than Chayan, who is failing to convert the penalty corners even in the practice sessions,’ said Mahbub, who is expecting better performance in the tournament.
Bangladesh won Bronze medal in the previous occasion in 2010.
However, Chayan, who has been representing the national team since 2004, was shocked to be eliminated from the national squad.
‘I was satisfied with my performance in the training camp but I could not satisfy the selectors and coaches. I hope the boys who have been picked up will give their best,’ said Chayan.
Midfielder Sarwar Hossain was named the captain of the team while goalkeeper Ashim Ghop has been appointed Sarwar’s deputy.
