The National Sports Council on Monday suspended the elections of Bangladesh Chess Federation following a High Court order over flawed voters list.
The High Court on May 25 stayed the elections, scheduled for Tuesday, for three months and issued a rule asking the authorities why the existing voters list for the elections should not be declared illegal.
A High Court bench comprised of Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury and Justice Md Khasruzzaman issued the stay order on the elections responding to a writ petition filed by Sarwar Hossain Golden Sporting Club.
The petitioner cited several irregularities in the voters’ list saying that NSC did not allow any amendment to the draft voters list of chess federation unlike other federations.
The petitioner also claimed that the election commissioner dropped nine clubs, including his Golden Sporting Club from the final list despite including them in the draft list.
Meanwhile, the president of Sheikh Russell Memorial Chess Club Mojibur Rahman Hawlader filed another writ petition in High Court claiming abnormality in the voters list.
Mojibur, whose councillorship from Barisal District Sports Association was declared illegal by the election commission, challenged the decision in the court.
