The Christian community across the country and elsewhere in the world on Wednesday celebrated Christmas, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, with zeal and fervour.
Christians believe that God appeared on earth through His son, Jesus Christ, on this day. Christian devotees on the eve of the day offered special prayers at different churches marking the day with religious fervour. The prayer houses and adjoining areas were decked up with colourful tiny blinking lights and illuminated Christmas trees had been placed with a star standing right on top. Santa Claus handed out Christmas gifts to the children on the occasion.
Special dishes were made in Christian families and children sought blessings from the elders. Food and clothes were distributed among the poor people in the community to mark the occasion.
Special arrangements were made for children and their families at different hotels, restaurants and lounges. In Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel, magic show, monkey dancing, merry-go-round, puppet show and bioscope were arranged for children. Special food and dinner were also served.
President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and leader of the Opposition Khaleda Zia issued separate messages greeting members of the Christian community on the occasion.
In his message, the President said Jesus Christ is one of the greatest men of the world who came in different ages to lead the mankind towards the path of truth and human welfare.
