Sidewalks in most areas of the capital are occupied by businesses, making them difficult for pedestrians to use them as they have virtually no room to manoeuvre against heavy presence of makeshift tea stalls, clothes markets, auto repair shops, and many others storing commercial goods. Sidewalks of Paribagh Road (culvert) is occupied by tiles and building materials of shops in the area. The area hosts the largest retail market of construction material, especially items for interior decoration, including floor tiles, wall tiles, bathroom tiles, bathroom fittings, etc.
This market stretches down Bangla Motor intersection to Eastern Plaza.
Despite reports with photographs in The Independent regarding occupying sidewalks, authorities are yet to take proper action. Now the tiles shops are using the Paribagh Road (culvert), where storage of these tiles on the sidewalk is less visible in the eyes of the authorities but pose threats to the users like pedestrians, cars and buses who often take the route to avoid traffic jams.
