Senior Awami League (AL) leader Suranjit Sengupta on Monday said the just concluded city elections witnessed the victory of propaganda and confusion created by religious communal groups among the people. “The religious communal groups won the city elections by carrying out propaganda and spreading confusion among the people unitedly. The 14-party alliance failed to carryout campaign in favour of the ruling party candidates. That’s why our honest and efficient candidates faced debacle in the polls,” he said this while addressing a discussion meeting at the Institute of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh conference hall.
The meeting on “Holding election in a free and fair manner: commitment of Sheikh Hasina” organised by Bangabandhu Academy was held with its adviser former MP Haji Selim in the chair.
He however, said that the defeat of the 14-party candidates in the polls is a positive sign because it has proved that free and fair election can be held under the present government led by Sheikh Hasina.
Suranjit, who is a member of AL advisory council, said the defeated 14-party candidates greeted the winners and accepted the mandate of the people. But the people would have to face a number of hartals if the opposition candidates were defeated, he added.
He , also a minister without portfolio, said the ruling party has taken lesson from the city elections.
“If the government and 14-party cannot take lesson from the defeat and face the communal groups it may influence the forthcoming general polls and the government would have to face such a crises in the future,” he observed.
