A two-day classical festival featuring classical music performances by noted and upcoming singers began at Chhayanuat auditorium on Thursday.
Cultural organisation Chhayanuat has organised the festival Suddho Sangeet Utsab 1420 with a goal to popularize and spread classical music among the music enthusiasts in the country.
The first day programme began with presentation of raga hansadhwani in chorus by the artistes of Chhayanaut. Music directed by Ashit Dey, the chorus performed the raga accompanied with harmonium and tabla. The beginning of the piece, the alap, consisted of slow notes, which then gradually rose to a fast and elaborate narration, the bistar, which equally accelerated the heartbeat of the listeners.
Classical artiste Rezwanul Haque was next to get on stage and to present classical music. Through his soulful voice presenting the delicate rhythms of raga yaman, Haque created a joyous atmosphere within the hall.
Latifun Julio presented raga sushka kalyan accompanied by tabla and harmonium. Her enchanting voice modulation projected a vigorous yet dramatic expression that entertained the listeners.
Dolan Kanungo’s presentation of raga bagashree on mohan beena shattered the silence of the night and compelled the viewers to keep listening. Sourav Kumar Saha was the last artiste to present classical music for the day. Saha presented raga bihag, which is a nighttime raga. The presentation created a festive ambience as the mood of the raga is both celebratory and romantic.
A good number of audience enjoyed the first day‘s performances of the festival which was dedicated to recently the demised classical singer Ustad Rabiul Hossain.
Shyamoli Nasrin, a house wife who lives in Dhanmondi, was among the audience. ‘Even though I do not understand much about classical music, I absolutely enjoyed the melodious pieces,’ Nasrin told New Age.
