The interns at Chittagong Medical College Hospital on Saturday began an indefinite strike protesting against attack on a intern physician, also former medical college unit Chhatra League president.
Activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student organisation backed by the ruling Awami League, locked the gates of the medical college hospital blockaded Prabartak intersection suspending vehicular movements for about one hour and a half protesting against the attack on Shohel Parvej Sumon.
Shohel, who was undergoing treatment at the casualty department, told reporters that he, along with three other friends, was returning to the college with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw at about 7:30am.
Activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, intercepted our auto-rickshaw with three motorbikes in front of National Hospital at Mehidibug and hit in Shohel’s head with sharp weapon and metal pipe bringing him down, he said.
The attackers left the spot when locals came forward.
Chittagong Medical College Intern Doctors Association convenor Rashedul Reza Suny said that they began the indefinite strike soon after the incident demanding arrest of the attackers and ensuring safety of the intern doctors.
