Arifur Rahman, a 17-year old first year HSC student of Adamjee Cantonment College, died on the spot run over by a speeding bus at the busy Farmgate crossing in the city on Saturday.
He became the second victim of road accident in the city in as many days, osing life only a day after a university student was killed by a speeding van at Mirpur Road in the city.
Arif’s body remained uncared for at Dhaka Medical College Hospital for more than two hours until his parents came to know that their only son is dead.
‘My son wanted to become a doctor and we had a lot of dreams about him,’ said his father, Nazrul Islam, wailing for his lost child, still in college uniform lying at the hospital’s casualty ward.
He had secured GPA 5 in his SSC examination from Bheramara Pilot High School.
A special branch sub-inspector, Nazrul was recently posted at the prime minister’s office.
Arif was crossing the road at about 5.30 PM on his way back home at North Kafrul after attending coaching classes when a mini bus of Sakalpa Paribahan knocked and ran over him, witnesses said. Sher-e-Banglanagar police said seriously injured he was rushed to hospital where he died.
The DMCH register, however, said that Arif was brought dead.
Angry students of the coaching centres around Farmgate damaged a number of vehicles after the accident.
After finding in the college identity who should be contacted in case of an emergency, the police informed his father. The police seized the bus, but the driver, as usual, escaped.
Arif would be buried at his ancestral home at Indrapur, a village in Patuakhali, his father said.
Reckless driving killed at least 11 pedestrians in the city last week, show news published by newspapers.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police said 324 people were killed and 272 others critically injured in 552 road accidents in the city in 2009.
Reckless driving is responsible for 98 per cent of road accidents, say traffic experts.
