After missing several deadlines, the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha is going to start the construction work of 3.1-kilometre Kuril flyover on May 2.
The 14.5 metre-high one-way flyover project involving Tk 153 crore will be implemented by Rajuk itself with its own fund on about 12.68 acres of land under the ongoing Purbachal New Town Project.
Of the land, about 10 acres belong to the Bangladesh Railway and the rest to individuals. The land acquisition has already been completed, said a Rajuk official.
The 8.9 metre wide flyover with four loops — two Y loops and two U loops — is intended to connect the capital with the under construction Purbachal New Town and to ease traffic congestion at Kuril intersection.
The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, is expected to inaugurate the construction work formally at 10:00am on the day, Rajuk chairman Nurul Huda told New Age.
The head of the immediate-past caretaker government, Fakhruddin Ahmed, on December 17, 2008 inaugurated the construction of the Kuril flyover at the connecting point of the Airport Road and Pragati Sarani to start its work in March 2009. But Rajuk could not start the work in March.
Had the construction work of the flyover been commenced on time, it would have been completed by December 2010 as now it will take two years to be completed in 2012.
The cabinet purchase committee, however, on March 1 approved the tender proposal for constructing the flyover at a cost of around Tk 153 crore.
Two firms — Project Builders Limited of Bangladesh and Major Bridge Eng Company (China) JV — will implement the project, said an official of Rajuk.
Three local consulting firms — the Development Design Consultants Limited, the Consulting House and the Divine Associates Limited — were assigned to conduct the feasibility study of the flyover.
The exit points of the flyover have been proposed to be constructed at Banani and on Airport Road, Progati Sarani and Purbachal Road, a Rajuk official said.
A 13km long and 300-feet wide road is also being developed as part of the Purbachal project.
The construction work of another flyover — Gulistan-Jatrabari flyover, which has remained suspended for the last several years, will also resume towards the middle of this month, said an official of Dhaka City Corporation.
