Police assaulted a journalist in Tanore upazila of the district yesterday for writing a report depicting corruption and irregularities in the local police administration.
The report was published on Wednesday in Sonar Desh, a local daily, where the victim, Imran Hossain works as an upazila correspondent.
According to Imran, Azizur Rahman Sarker, officer-in-charge of Tanore Police Station called him yesterday morning, asking him to come over to the police station.
When he reached there, the OC hurled abuses at him for “daring” to write the report. Then he assaulted him physically and had him thrown out of the premises, Imran alleged.
Sonar Desh Planning Editor Shibli Noman said that the newspaper carried a special weekly page on that day containing reports by its upazila correspondents on “Bribery, police and prevalence of brokers or middlemen at police stations”.
Four other upazila correspondents of Durgapur, Bagha, Baghmara and Puthia have already fled their homes after receiving threats from the brokers, he added.
When contacted, OC Sarker denied the allegation.
Hasan Millat, executive editor of the daily filed a written complaint with Rajshahi Superintendent of Police (SP) SM Rokon Uddin.
The SP has assigned Additional SP Imran Ali to inquire into the matter, he told The Daily Star.
Rajshahi Union of Journalists and Metropolitan Press Club, Rajshahi condemned the incident.
