Around 300 students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) were sued yesterday in two cases filed in connection with Thursday’s violence on and outside the campus.
Ashulia police recorded one case naming six students and around 100 unnamed on charges of attacking the on-duty policemen and obstructing them in the discharge of their duties during the violence, said Badrul Alam, officer-in-charge of Ashulia Police Station.
Another case was lodged with Savar Police Station against 12 named and around 200 unnamed students on the same charges.
No arrests were made till filing of the report around 8:00pm.
Meanwhile, the JU authorities will hold a press conference at the Senate Hall today regarding the campus violence and police firing on students.
Vice-chancellor Prof Anwar Hossain will brief newsmen at the press conference slated for noon, said a university release.
A five-member probe committee will start its work today to investigate the rowdyism. The JU authorities formed the committee on Thursday and asked it to submit its report within three weeks.
Students vacated their dormitories yesterday after the authorities on Thursday declared to shut the university till August 25.
Police were deployed on the campus as well as at some key points on the highway near the university to maintain law and order, said JU Proctor Tapan Kumar Saha.
Violence erupted on the campus after some unruly youths stabbed Tahmidul Islam Likhon, a student of economics department and an activist of president-secretary faction of JU unit Chhatra League, near the gate No 1 of JU around 9:30pm on Wednesday.
In protest, students brought out a procession on the campus around 11:00pm.
Minutes later, police entered Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall and tried to arrest Nahid, a third year student of anthropology department.
Police fired blank shots when other students resisted their attempt to arrest Nahid. At one stage, police shot rubber bullets and shotgun shells injuring at least five.
Students took to the streets soon after Wednesday midnight and put barricades on Dhaka-Aricha highway, creating about 12-km tailback. They also vandalised 15 vehicles.
The blockades were lifted around 3:45pm on Thursday.
On Thursday night, Likhon’s mother Kazi Johra Begum filed a case with Savar Police Station against 10 students including Mahbub Riaz, Ashrafuzzaman Liton and Shadikul Islam Nahid for stabbing her son.
Likhon has been undergoing treatment at Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar.
