At least three people, including a couple and a woman, were killed in a collision between a battery-run easy-bike and a passenger bus at Shanir Akhra area in the city on Tuesday. However, a four-year-old physically challenged girl, Meem, survived the crash. She suffered minor injuries. The victims were identified as Ajmeri Begum Merry, 35, her husband Khalilur Rahman, 40, and Maya Chowdhury, 55, a woman passenger of the easy-bike.
Quoting witnesses, the police said that the incident had taken place when a Dhaka-bound passenger bus collided with an easy-bike near the Shonir Akhra Bridge at noon, leaving one dead on the spot and two others critically injured.
While Merry died on the spot, her husband Khalil and Maya Chowdhury died at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). Local residents rescued the Meem, the daughter of the couple, and handed her to relatives.
Khalil, who was an employee of Shahid Nobi School at Tikatuli area in the city, and his wife Merry used to reside at Rayerbagh of Shonir Akhra with their daughter. The other deceased, Maya Chowdhury, who hailed from Daudkandi in Comilla, was staying at Kadomtoli.
Md Rana Islam, who witnessed the collision and rushed the victims to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), said the collision took place when the speeding passenger bus was crossing the Shonior Akhra Bridge.
The easy bike got skidded off the road after colliding with the bus. The bus driver fled after the accident, but local residents and pedestrians detained the bus.
Aboni Shankar Kor, officer in-charge of Jatrabari Police Station, said all the victims were passengers of the easy-bike that collided with the bus on the Dhaka-Sonapur route, leaving three dead and a injured child. He said the police are still searching for the driver and helper of the bus.
