Assailants on Wednesday morning shot dead a businessman and his wife in their rented house allegedly over their rejection of a marriage proposal for their daughter at Kalachandpur in the Gulshan area in Dhaka.
The deceased were fisheries and nursery businessman Sadikur Rahman, 50, and his wife, Romana Nargis, 45, residents of Kalachandpur School Road at Gulshan.
Sadikur Rahman’s son-in-law Mohammad Ishaq Khan told New Age, ‘One Rubel, known for his criminal activities in the locality, along with his friend Mithun went to the house of the victims about 9:00am and proposed that their school-going younger daughter should be married off to Rubel.’
‘As Sadikur rejected their proposal saying they would not marry off their school-going daughter now, Rubel instantly shot him and his wife in the head, face and chest,’ Ishaq said.
Hearing repeated gunshots, other members of the family and neighbours rushed in and found the couple lying in a pool of blood on the floor.
Sadikur, who was president of the Dhaka City Nursery Businessmen’s Association, died on his way to hospital and Romana died about 12:30pm after being admitted to the nearby United Hospital.
Sadikur’s youngest of three daughters, Nilufar Yasmin Eti, is a student of Class IX of the Kalachandpur High School.
Ishaq said, ‘Rubel also went to the house of Sadikur about 2:00am with the marriage proposal but Sadikur asked him to leave the house and come with his parents.’
He alleged Rubel had tried to kidnap Eti from their house as her parents rejected his marriage proposal.
‘Rubel and Mithun are drug addicts and they threatened Sadikur and his family with dire consequences if they would not accept the marriage proposal.’ Ishaq said.
He also claimed Rubel was an activist of the banned Islamist outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir Bangladesh.
The security guard of the house, Abbas Ali, 55, told New Age, ‘Sadikur Rahman’s daughter Sathi told me that Rubel had shot his father about 9:00am. Hearing the gunshot, I tried to lock the collapsible gate but Rubel and his friend Mithun threatened to kill me if I would close the gate. They got away in a moment.’
Rubel and Mithun are residents of the neighbouring Jagannathpur area. The families of Rubel and Mithun could not be contacted as they went into hiding after the incident.
Quoting victim’s elder daughter Sumaia Islam Bithi, the Gulshan police officer-in-charge, Kamal Uddin said, ‘Rubel and his friend Mithun entered the house about 9:00am and asked the couple to accept their marriage proposal. Soon after the refusal, Rubel shot them.’
The bodies were sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations.
