A sessions court in Dhaka on Wednesday set a fresh date on November 5 for delivering the verdict of BDR carnage case. Additional metropolitan sessions court judge-III Md Akhtaruzaman, who was scheduled to deliver the verdict on Wednesday in the case against 846 accused, has fixed the fresh date. On the day, the defence lawyer, Faroque Ahmed, filed a petition for holding further argument of the case as the court is taking time for delivering the verdict.
He also told the court that the defence had got only nine working days for argument of behalf of 846 accused.
On October 20, the court had set the date on the completion of the final arguments by the prosecution and the defence counsels.
The court officials said that delivery of the verdict in the case has been postponed on Tuesday as the judgement was not written completely. An official, however, said that the court refrained from delivering verdict in a hurried manner to avoid any controversy.
Public Prosecutor Mosharraf Hossain Kajol, who had been dealing the case since it was filed, said that due to some circumstances it had been postponed. Another defence counsel, Shameem Sardar, said, ‘There is nothing to hurry… as goes the adage justice hurried, justice buried.’
The bloody rebellion, which broke out two months after the Awami League-led government assumed office, killed 75 people, including 57 army officers deputed in the paramilitary force.
On September 2, the court wrapped up recording of the depositions of prosecution witnesses which saw 654 out of 1,345 prosecution witnesses, mostly BGB soldiers and army officers, testify against the accused.
