The police arrested Mufti Harun, son of Hefazat Nayeb-e-Amir Mufti Izhar, along with his bodyguard Md Junaied, from Isapur village under Hathazari upazila in Chittagong on Wednesday. Earlier, police arrested four teachers and one student of Jamiatul Ulum Al Islamia Madrasa. They were Tafsir Ahamed (50), a teacher of the primary section, Md Ishak (33), a teacher of Hafejkhana, Abdul Manan (26), a teacher of the Hadis department, Monir Hossain (55), the hostel super of the madrasa, and final year student (masters level) Habibur Rahman (24).
Police produced the arrested Mufti Harun, Md Junaied, Tafsir Ahamed, Md Ishak, Abdul Manan, Monir Hossain and Habibur Rahman before the Chittagong metropolitan magistrate’s court on Wednesday. The metropolitan magistrate, Sayed Mashfiqul Islam, granted a total 10-day remand to Mufti Harun in connection with the two cases that were filed against him for stocking, manufacturing and exploding grenades.
The court also granted one day remand to Md Junaied. It granted Tafsir Ahamed, Md Ishak, Abdul Manan, Monir Hossain and Habibur Rahman five days remand in connection with the same cases.
SM Nurul Huda, assistant commissioner (prosecution) of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP), confirmed the news.
Mohammed Jobaier Ahammod (24), another student who was seriously hurt in the grenade blast on Monday, succumbed to his injuries around 6 am in the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Wednesday morning. So far, the grenade explosion has claimed two lives.
