An Indonesian container ship bound for Chittagong port on Monday got stranded in Andaman Sea near Myanmar coast due to engine failure after water entered the ship through a crack, port and shipping officials said. Trouble hit MV Gladys on Monday as its engine went out of order after sea water entered the engine room through a crack, making its journey uncertain, they added.
‘The ship drifted to shallow water near Myanmar coast and anchored there,’ said Kazi Shahid Mahmud, operation in charge of the ship’s local agent Trident Shipping Ltd.
‘The owner of the ship is now looking for a powerful tug boat to pull it to Chittagong port, otherwise its journey with over 800 containers, will be uncertain,’ he added.
‘Efforts were under way to pump the sea water out of its engine room to keep the ship floating there,’ he said adding that the ship was scheduled to reach Chittagong port on Wednesday.
The ship started its journey from Malaysian port Kelang on July 26, he said.
