Announces daily allowance of Tk 150
The Chittagong mayor, Manjur Alam, on Wednesday shared opinions with the city handicapped beggars over their permanent rehabilitation and keeping the city beggar-free during the upcoming World Cup Cricket.
Among others, president of Physically Handicapped Beggars’ Welfare Association Nur Mohammed, its general secretary Tofazzal Hussain, CCC chief executive officer Manjur I Elahi, chairman of social welfare standing committee of CCC Hasan Murad attended the meeting at the Theatre Institute of the Chittagong Auditorium at 10:00am.
A total of 500 beggars with visual, hearing, mental, physical disabilities participated in the opinion-sharing meeting.
The mayor announced Tk 150 as daily allowance for the handicapped beggars as part of the city corporation’s long-term plan for beggars’ rehabilitation.
‘This is not an initiative on the occasion of World Cup Cricket only. Rather, we want to rehabilitate the beggars permanently through incorporating them in different volunteering activities of the CCC,’ he said.
Chittagong City Corporation sources told New Age that a liaison committee of the beggars comprising 5 members, including a female member, was formed on this purpose.
The committee, in association with CCC will make a list of handicapped beggars of the city.
