There are dances for every occasion and emotion, which is why it has the potential to serve as a means of expression for all who embrace it. In the moments when our longest yearnings materialise, we often start dancing even without being aware of it.
Dance gives us strength, courage, inspiration and perseverance to carry on. Thus practice of this art form could be a way out for people in this present restless world. These are the positive impacts of dance that were upheld at a seminar at the Music and Dance Centre Auditorium of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Tuesday afternoon.
The seminar was a part of concluding day’s events of weeklong celebration programmes organsied by Bangladesh Nritya Shilpy Sangstha to celebrate International Dance Day 2014 which fell on Tuesday.
At the seminar, the key note paper titled Nritya Tomar Muktir Rup was read out by noted dancers Warda Rihab and Benejir Salam, who are also the writers of the paper. The seminar was attended by Minu Haque, president of Bangladesh Nritya Shilpy Sangstha, and dancers from across the country.
The key-note paper pointed out how dance could be a remedy of all sorts of crisis for mankind. Besides, the paper emphasised especially on the contribution of Nobel Laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore and National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam in the dance arena of the country. It was also mentioned that the dance dramas of Tagore and the folk songs of Nazrul have presented tremendous scope for dance over the years.
The day’s programme also included dance recitals at the Shaheed Minar premises in the morning. The dancers of the Sangstha presented a Mangal Nritya at the show which also featured a group dance recital to the song Joy Sottyer Joy by the artistes of Dibbo Nrityaloy. A colouful procession attended by hundreds of dancers from different districts began its walk from Shaheed Minar and ended at Shilpakala Academy.
A discussion was held at the National Theatre Hall of the academy in the evening. Cultural affairs minister Asaduzzaman Noor attended the programme as chief guest in presence of Liaquat Ali Lucky, director general of BSA, Ranjit Kumar Biswas, cultural affairs secretary, and Nasrin Ahmed, deputy vice-chancellor of Dhaka University. Sharmin Hossain, president of Chittagong branch of the Sangstha, was bestowed with Lifeime Achievement Honour at the programme for her contributions to the dance arena of the country. The discussion session was followed by a dance show where different dance organisations presented charming dance recitals in chorus.
