Promising classical dancer Sudeshna Swayamprabha Tathoi has recently come into discussion for her performance in renowned Indian filmmaker Gautam Ghose’s yet to be released feature film ‘Moner Manush’.
Tathoi plays the role of Golapi, the wife of the young Lalon in the film, which is based on the life and philosophy of the great baul, Fakir Lalon Shah.
‘My performance as the main character named “Elida” in the dance drama “A Lady from the Sea” caught attention of Habibur Rahman, the Bangladeshi producer of the joint production film. He introduced me to co-producer Gautam Ghose who was looking for the appropriate girl for the character of Golapi. Ghose chosen me for the role,’ said the dance artiste about her debut in film.
‘I want to concentrate mainly on classical dance. However, if I get proposal for acting in such worthy roles, I will act again. I think dance is closely related with acting, and thus acting will not hamper my dance career, ’said Tathoi.
Tathoi, daughter of noted classical dancer Sharmila Banerjee and acclaimed recitation artiste Bhaswar Banerjee, began her dance lessons when she was only five. Along with her mother, she received tutelage in classical and Monipuri dance from the Kolkata Monipuri Nartanalaya in India. She completed her graduation in Monipuri under the tutelage of Sharmila Benerjee and Tamanna Rahman and in Bharatnatyam under noted dancer Balayet Hossain Khan from Chhayanaut Sanskritik Kendra. Now she is honing in another classical dance form Odissi under the tutelage of Benzir Salam. Tathoi was also taught at the Chhayanaut and Nritya Nandan Dance School.
‘As a dancer, I was inspired a lot when I won the ‘Tarana’ knock-out dance competition in 2008, which was aired on National Television. It was my first participation in such dance competition.’
A student of Anthropology department of Dhaka University, Tathoi said she enjoyed the rhythm of classical dance which transferred to her soul through the body movement. The young artiste has performed in different venues in and outside Bangladesh.
