DCC asks owners, authorities to preserve 93 city heritage sites

The Dhaka City Corporation is issuing letters asking the owners or the authorities of 93 city heritage buildings or sites, listed earlier for preservation, not to bring any changes to the structures.
‘The DCC is issuing letters to the owners or the authorities of 93 heritage sites the list of which was prepared by the City Development Committee,’ Marzia Begum, research officer of Urban Planning Division of the corporation, told New Age on Monday.
The listed buildings and areas will not be fully or partially demolished, rebuilt, altered or modified without approval of the City Development Commi-ttee, the letter said.
The letter further said, ‘Any earlier notice to break down or renovate the structures will stand ineffective after this letter.’
The City Development Committee, headed by the housing and public works secretary, has listed a total of 93 structures and sites considering their historical, aesthetic, scientific, social, cultural, religious, political and heritage value.
After the government, through a gazette notification, declared the 93 structures and places to be preserved as heritage sites, the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartirpakka has asked the DCC to take necessary steps to preserve them.
However, neither Rajuk nor the DCC took any steps to introduce the concept of ‘Transfer of Development Right’ to compensate the private owners of the listed heritage properties and persuade them to cooperate with the conservation move.
The listed structures have been identified in 1,528 square kilometres area of Dhaka Metropolitan Development Plan area.
