Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) has taken a project to renovate major roads, islands and dividers in the capital as a part of beautification on the eve of the World Cup Cricket-2011 scheduled to be kicked off on February 17.
A total of Tk 54 crore has been allocated to implement the project that includes repair of 27 roads and beautification work, said Abdur Razzaque, DCC superintendent engineer of circle-2.
He said all the dividers and islands on the 27 roads will be coloured with painting and various flowery trees will be planted there to give the roads a beautiful look.
Priorities are being given to those roads which surfaces are damaged and full of potholes, said the official, adding that some private companies will carry out the beautification work.
Razzaque said the companies have been given special instruction to take care of those plants.
“Many foreign dignitaries will visit the country during the world cup. With our limited resources, we are trying to give the city a beautiful look during the mega event,” said City Mayor Sadek Hossain Khoka.
Banani-Kakoli to Mohak-hali rail crossing of Airport Road, Bijoy Sarani to Bangla Motor, Hare Road (Hotel Sheraton to Kakrail Masjid), Mirpur-10 to Rokeya Sarani and many other roads will be developed for smooth transportation of foreigners, officials and cricket lovers.
The repair work of these roads is going on in full swing and 20 percent work has already been completed, said Col Sayed Masud, supervisor of the develop-ment work.
He said the whole work will be completed by February 5.A massive reconstruction work will be carried out on six or seven roads around the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium at Mirpur.
“Some bypass roads will also be reconstructed around Mirpur-10, 11 and 12 to divert motor vehicles so that no traffic jam and chaos arises during the world cup,” said Abdur Razzaque adding, “We need to renovate those roads on urgent basis for ensuring their smooth transportation.”
Existing main road around the stadium would be reserved only for the players, officials and spectators.
