The Chittagong City Corporation on Sunday began demolishing Shebak Colony, a dilapidated and risky building inhabited by cleaners of the corporation, at Patharghata under Kotwali police station in the port city.
CCC sources said the building was identified as risky years back but the authorities failed to demolish it as the inhabitants did not leave it. Mohammad Shamshuddoha, secretary of the
corporation, said the corporation had earlier taken up initiatives to demolish the risky building two times.
‘The inhabitants did not vacate the building although they were asked to do so. Now we have decided to demolish the risky and dilapidated building to avoid casualties in case the building collapses,’ said he, adding that other risky buildings would be demolished in phases.
The building was erected during the Pakistan period. The cleaning staff of the city corporation had been living in the building for long.
