Bangladesh, for the first time in South Asia, is going to frame a national adolescent strategy to pay proper attention to teenagers. State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Ministry (MoWCA) Meher Afroze Chumki MP said the adolescent period is very sensitive and it’s the age of inquisitiveness when children usually make mistakes. “In our country, parents are not used to give attention to the adolescent, though they pay extra attention to their children aging zero to five,” the state minister said as chief guest at a suggestive meeting of forming national adolescent strategy, held at a city hotel.
Chief of Child Protection at UNICEF Bangladesh Rose-Anne Papavero were present at this time while MoWCA secretary Tarik Ul Islam presided over the meeting. At the adolescent period, children are feeling lonely and they engage in unsocial and risky activities or become drug addicted, the minister said.
The minister also said that child marriage is the main barrier of women empowerment and in implementation of Vision-2021.
Tarik Ul Islam said parents should be more attached with their children during their adolescent period as it is very sensitive age for them. During this period, many children even commit suicide due to small issues such as: not getting a mobile, unexpected result, the secretary said.
