The action by Dhaka University administrators to demote faculty member Samia Rahman on accusations of plagiarism was declared “illegal” by the High Court on Thursday, August 4, 2022.

On 31 August 2021, Samia Rahman filed a writ with the High Court challenging the university decision.
Earlier on September 5 last year, following the same petition, the HC issued a rule asking the authorities concerned of the government and DU to explain why the decision to demote Samia Rahman should not be declared illegal.
At the university’s monthly syndicate meeting, three faculty members from Dhaka University, including Samia Rahman, were demoted on the grounds of plagiarism in their research papers.
Syed Mahfujul Haque Marjan from the Department of Criminology and Muhammad Omor Faruq from the Department of Islamic History and Culture are the other two faculty members who have been demoted.
Omor, who had the position of assistant professor, was downgraded to lecturer, and his PhD was revoked. Former lecturer Marjan is currently on a study leave.
