Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser in-charge of Ministry of Environment and Forests Raja Debashish Roy said, Bangladesh has recommended for reduction of emission of green house gas by 40 percent by the year 2020 and by 80 percent by 2050.
In the 14th conference of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Bangladesh also proposed for operationalizing the Adaptation Fund and also ensuring direct access to the Fund for the member states, which were adopted at the conference.
Special Assistant said this at a press conference at the Conference Room of the Press Information Department (PID) here.
Debasish said, Bangladesh wants establishment of an International Adaptation Centre for conducting research on adaptation and piloting adaptation programmes.
The Special Assistant while heading a 15-member delegation to the UNFCCC held at Poznan, in Poland between December 1 and 12, placed a 11-point recommendations for facing the adverse impacts of green house gas on the global climate.
The proposals included provision of providing debt relief from the Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) for the developing countries affected by the natural calamities caused due to climate change.
Besides, simplification of clean development project and enhancing the capacity of the member countries in this regard and consideration on permanent migration due to climate change were suggested, the Special Assistant said.
At the UNFCCC conference, Bangladesh made three presentations titled “Shared Vision”, “Climate Change and Insurance: The LDC Context” and “Cooperation on Research and Development”.
The 15th conference of the UNFCCC would be held in Copenhagen, Denmark on December next year, he informed.
Bangladesh has already formulated the Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan 2008 for facing the serious impacts of climate change and the government in the current budget has allocated Taka 300 crore to overcome the situation, the Special Assistant said.
He emphasized the need for naming a climate change minister or climate change envoy of Bangladesh to spearhead the hectic climate change negotiations from now, upto and beyond Copenhagen. The next elected government, he hoped, would take necessary steps in this regard.
At the conference, Bangladesh was elected Vice-Chair of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice, he said.
Environment Secretary AHM Rezaul Kabir, DG of DoE Dr Khandkher Rashedul Haque, BIDS Research Director Dr M Asaduzzaman, and PIO Iftekhar Hosain also spoke.
