Bangladesh is set to sign an agreement to re-establish air connectivity with Myanmar today.
‘We will sign the final agreement with Myanmar tomorrow,’ civil aviation minister Faruk Khan told the news agency on Wednesday.
Faruk Khan said signing of the deal would cement the Dhaka-Yangon ties further. ‘Several operators, including private airlines, would be able to operate passenger and cargo flights after signing the agreement,’ he said.
The minister said increased frequency of flights and inclusion of private airlines would help develop tourism, enhance bilateral trade and people-to-people contact between the two neighbouring countries. ‘Flights could also be operated from Chittagong once the deal is signed,’ he added.
Last year, Bangladesh and Myanmar signed the Air Services Agreement to operate seven passenger flights and four cargo flights a week between the two countries. National flag carrier Biman suspended its Dhaka-Yangon flight in 2007 due to losses.
The bilateral trade between Bangladesh and Myanmar has been taking place under the General Trade Agreement and Border Trade Agreement, signed in 1973 and 1994 respectively.
