Superintendent of Police in Dinajpur Ruhul Amin on Monday admitted that the police had failed to control the situation before and after the attack on Hindus at Kornai in Dinajpur Sadar upazila on January 5. The Dinajpur district authorities on Monday held a meeting at the Kornai Government Primary School and told the local people that the administration would take steps to maintain communal harmony in the area. Amin said his department would leave no stone unturned to bring the accused to justice and ensure communal amity. He appealed to the people to remain calm and sought their cooperation.
Three different cases have been filed and 33 persons arrested in this connection, Amin said.
Ahmed Shamim Al Razi, deputy commissioner of Dinajpur, said: “We have formed a three-member inquiry committee and are awaiting its report.” Urging all communities to remain calm, he said: “People of all religions have equal rights and every person has the right to defend him or herself from such attacks.”
Lt Col Fazle Quader Ahmed, commanding officer of the BGB 2 Battalion, said his battalion would work along with the police to provide security to the affected people.
BGB members have started repairing damaged shops and houses. During his visit to the place, this correspondent found that at least eight shops had been repaired.
