The kaleidoscopic life of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore has been illustrated in a documentary film screened at the auditorium of National Art Gallery of Bangladesh Shilkpakala Academy on Tuesday.
The 95-minute documentary film titled Rabindranath Thakur: Jibon O Samay has been directed by Indian filmmaker Mujibar Rahman.
The film portrays the life of Tagore through the use of numerous photos and video clippings of the poet starting from his childhood till his death at the age of 80.
The life of the poet has been narrated by Debashish Basu and Dr Ananda Pal in Bangla and English respectively.
Rahman has used actors playing the role of Tagore in order to offer a more personal demonstration of the poet.
Noted Kolkata-based film actor Soumitra Chattapadhyay has recited Tagore’s poems and letters portraying significant moments of his life in the documentary featuring manuscripts of those poems and letters.
The film also illustrates Tagore’s relationship and moments with important historical figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Netaji Suvaschandra Basu.
According to the director Mujibar Rahman, he has taken help from different sources like National Library of India, Biswabharati University, Bangoyio Sahitto Parisad, Kolkata Town Hall Achieve, etc.
‘People read Rabindranath’s creations but actually they know very little about the biography of the poet. I was always passionate about the poet and wanted to know more about his life but found that there were very few works in the market with a comprehensive picture of the poet’s life. So I decided to make the film, which took me about five years to complete,’ said the director to New Age.
Rahman also informed that the noted filmmaker Satyajit Ray made a documentary titled Rabindranath before him. But the 55-minute documentary film presented the poet’s life in nut shell while Rahman has tried to show a more detailed picture in Rabindranath Thakur: Jibon O Samay.
The vice chancellor of Dhaka University AAMS Arifin Siddique was present at the documentary screening session as the chief guest; in presence of general secretary of Sammilito Sangskritik Jote Hasan Arif and secretary of the academy Mohammad Jahangir as special guests. Rahman, at the programme, revealed his intention to make film on Kazi Nazrul Islam, Swami Vivekananda, Prafulla Chandra Ray, as well.
