A domestic help died on Monday night after being severely beaten allegedly by her employer in city’s Old DOHS, Banani.
Police and morgue sources said her death was caused by head injury.
The victim Solema Begum, 35, was brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Monday night by her employer Habibur Rahman who claimed she had ingested poison to ‘commit suicide’. The doctors at DMCH declared the woman dead.
Noticing several marks of injury on her body police held Habibur Rahman, an engineer of a cement factory and took him for questioning.
Habibur had moved from Banani to a house at Banani DOHS and got into an altercation with Solema as she was unwilling to take on the additional burden of work, Mohammad Salahuddin, officer-in-charge of Cantonment Police Station told The Daily Star.
At one stage of the argument Habibur beat Solema with a stick and hit her hard on the head.
Solema’s brother Saiful Islam told The Daily Star that his sister had been working at Habibur’s house for the last two years and suspected it to be a murder.
Police said, their primary investigation revealed Solema was actually beaten to death.
DMC morgue sources also said the victim’s death was caused by head injury.
A murder case was filed yesterday in this regard by Shahin Miah, another brother of the victim.
