Driver jailed for 7 years over student killing in road accident

A covered van driver was on Sunday sentenced to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment on charges causing the death of a student by reckless driving at Moghbazar in the capital on October 26, 2007.
The metropolitan magistrate, Munshi Abdul Mazid, sentenced to jail Nurul Islam on three charges of reckless driving, hurting and homicide.
The court jailed Nurul for four years on charges of homicide and for two years each on charges of reckless driving and grievous hurting.
As Nurul Islam is still in hiding, the sentences will be executed after his surrender or arrest, the court ordered.
The court, however, ordered simultaneous execution of the sentences, meaning Nurul would need to serve in jail for the highest four years.
The court also asked the police to return the covered van, which was seized, to the owner, Abu Ahmed.
Prosecutors alleged the covered van had hit a rickshaw carrying Eden Girls’ College student Farzana Hossain Shilpi and her fellow Nasrat Sharmin Liza from behind near the Wireless Gate at Moghbazar. Farzana died on the spot and Nasrat was injured.
Zinnat Ara, the aunt of the deceased, filed the case with the Ramna police. The police also seized the van but the driver, Nurul Islam, managed to get away.
The police who earlier submitted the final report in the case meaning it no people had been accused in the case, pressed charges against the driver, on March 25, 2008 as Farzana’s mother Sufia Hossain rejected the final report and appealed with the court for further investigation.
The court granted Nurul bail as he had surrendered on December 7, 2009. The court, however, cancelled Nurul’s bail as he had never appeared in court, said the subinspector Moksed Ali, who represented the state in the case.
Eight people, including the injured, his mother and the covered van owner, were named as prosecution witnesses in the case.
The court pronounced the verdict after cross-examining five out of the eight witnesses.
