A drug addict youth hacked to death four members, including his four-year-old boy, mother, sister and a distant relative, of his family at Golapganj in Sylhet on Thursday afternoon.
Local people handed over the killer, Abdus Salam alias Furuk, 35, a carpenter and son of the late Abdul Aziz of village Dakkhin Bhag Puranpara at Lakkhanaband union under Golapganj upazila, to police.
The deceased were identified as Furuk’s son Tanvir, 4, his sister Nazmin Begum, 30, mother Shamsunnahar, 60, and a distant grandmother Hanufa Begum, 70, sources in the police said.
Local sources said Furuk picked a quarrel with family members at around 2:00pm as they refused to give him money to buy drugs.
At one point, Furuk hacked his mother with an adze to death and also killed his sister and grandmother by hacking one after another as they tried to resist him. At last, he also killed his minor boy, Tanvir.
A schoolteacher, Akhtar Ahmed, also a neighbor of Furuk, told New Age that local people, hearing scream, rushed to the spot and held Furuk.
Akhtar informed that Furuk brought his son Tanvir from his father-in-law’s home of village Amkona under the same upazila Wednesday night.
He said Furuk’s wife, along with her son Tanvir and a one-year-old daughter, was living at her father’s home for several months following a quarrel with him (Furuk).
Being informed, a team of Golapganj police reached the spot at around 4:00pm when the locals handed over Furuk to the lawmen.
Golapganj police officer-in-charge Fazlul Haque Shibli confirmed the incident of killings.
‘The alleged killer, Furuk, was arrested,’ he added, saying they were preparing to send the bodies to the Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for postmortem examinations.
‘Necessary legal steps will also be taken later against the alleged killer,’ the police officer said.
