The Dhaka University authorities had not filed any case until 8:00pm on Sunday in connection with the killing of a DU student by some unruly transport workers at Motijheel in the capital on Saturday evening.
DU proctor KM Saiful Islam on Sunday afternoon told New Age that the university Syndicate would take a decision about the matter in a meeting scheduled to be held at 6:30pm.
The university authorities, rather, sent the body of Mohammad Redwan, a post-graduate student of Arabic, to his home in Barisal without conducting any autopsy.
Adilur Rahman, secretary of Odhikar, a human rights organisation, told New Age that it would be difficult to substantiate the death as a killing and bring the accused to book, if there was no autopsy and inquest report.
He said the DU authorities and the Dhaka Metropolitan Police were responsible for securing the inquest report and conducting the post-mortem examination of the unnatural death of the university student.
DU student Mobarak Hossain, who was present at the place of incident, told New Age that a number of workers of Himalaya Transport beat up Redwan, Jishan, and Munir with iron rods, leaving them severely injured.
KM Saiful Islam, who was present when Redwan’s body was handed over to his parents, told New Age that the body was sent without conducting an autopsy as the parents desired it. ‘Redwan’s parents gave an undertaking in this regard,’ he added.
Redwan’s uncle Bahauddin, who received the body, however, denied the proctor’s claim and told New Age that no undertaking had been given to the DU authorities.
Fellow students and relatives of Redwan Hossain alleged some senior teachers had insisted that Redwan’s body should not be brought to the university campus, fearing that the campus would erupt into violent protests against the unfortunate death.
Mohammad Reaz, younger brother of Redwan, told New Age that they [family members] were acting according to the instructions of some senior teachers.
‘They suggested us not to take my brother’s body to the university campus and that it would be better to take the body directly to Barisal from here [BIRDEM mortuary],’ he said.
