UGC yet to disburse budgetary allocation; July salaries provided from other sources
Dhaka University is facing an acute financial crisis as it has not yet received its budgetary allocation from the University Grants Commission.
The DU authority had to pay the salaries of its teachers, officials and other employees for July with money collected from alternative sources as the UGC has not yet disbursed the first chunk of Tk 555,000,000 to the university as of Wednesday.
The total budget for Dhaka University for 2011-12 fiscal year is over Tk 2.77 billion, of which Tk 2.22 billion will come from the UGC and the rest Tk 0.31 billion from the university’s own income.
Sources said the salaries of the university’s teachers, officials and other employees for July, August and September will be paid from the first portion of the UGC allocation.
The financial crisis will deepen in case of giving the salaries for August if the UGC does not disburse the money within shortest possible time.
“Besides, additional Tk 80 million is needed for Eid bonuses for the teachers, officials and staffs of the university,” said an official, requesting anonymity.
DU Treasurer Prof. Dr Mizanur Rahman told daily sun that Dhaka University has overcome the current situation collecting money from alternative sources. “But other universities may not be able to resolve the problem,” he said.
“The UGC should keep a strong watch over the matter in future as the universities across the country mostly depend on its allocations,” he added.
Muhammed Ibrahim Kabir, director of Finance and Accounts Division of UGC, told daily sun that the commission is yet to receive money from the government.
“We are seriously communicating with the ministry concerned. We hope to get the money within 15 August,” he said.
