The Exporters Association of Bangladesh on Tuesday demanded withdrawal of a government decision halting the movement of trucks, covered vans and lorries on the
highways for seven days from August 5 on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.
The government should withdraw the decision for the sake of uninterrupted export and import, it said in a news release.
An inter-ministerial meeting on Monday decided that the movement of trucks, covered vans and lorries would remain suspended on the highways from August
5 to ensure uninterrupted communications and reduce traffic jam during Eid celebration.
EAB president Abdus Salam Murshedy said the decision might take heavy toll on the export of the readymade garment sector as a large number of exporters would fail to maintain the lead time of shipment.
‘If the exporters fail to complete shipment in lead time a huge number of consignments will require to be sent through airfreight with 10 times cost. In some cases, the buyers may cancel the consignments,’ the release said.
The EAB release also said, ‘If the exporters fail to complete shipment in due time the businesses will not able to pay the wages and dues before Eid which may result labour unrest.’
