The Election Commission (EC) has directed banks and other service oriented organisations not to make National Identity (NID) card mandatory for clients and service seekers while providing their services, including opening a bank account, until distribution of NIDs is fully completed.
The EC directive came as some banks and service organizations are asking the service seeker to show NID or submit its copy for opening the bank account.
Some service-oriented organisations, including Directorate of Immigration and Passport and Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakkha (Rajuk) are also implementing the same rule without keeping any alternative way.
An EC circular issued on Wednesday said distribution of NID is yet to be completed to the voters of Dhaka City Corporation and some other areas though NIDs have been prepared for all the voters enlisted in the voter roll.
It also said all citizens are yet to be provided with NID and no government gazette notification has yet been issued making NID mandatory for availing such services.
“So, banks and others organisations have been directed not to make NID mandatory until issuing any gazette notification in this regard,” it said.
