The Election Commission (EC) has sought support from the Army, BGB and police to transport electoral equipment across the country as it felt that the regular surveillance of law enforcement agency is not adequate to ensure safety for transporting poll-related papers and equipment. Following the recent sporadic violence, triggered by the BNP-led 18-Party Alliance’s countrywide blockade programme, the armed forces are likely to be deployed at various strategic points across the country to contain violence.
Chief election commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed, on Wednesday evening, held a meeting with the principal staff officer of Armed Forces Division, Lt. Gen. Abu Belal Mohammad Shafiul Haque, at his office to discuss the issue. The meeting went on for half-an-hour, according to EC sources.
